1981 walks through a cornfield with Orville for an Orville Redenbacher Commercial

1982 wins Minnesota state piano competition playing “The Black Smith”

goes on to play Northrop Auditorium

1983 demolishes hundreds of Kemp’s ice cream pails to AC/DC records

1984 violin and piano are devoured by a blue sparkly drum kit with Zildjian cymbals from B# Music

1985 quits all sports and starts garage band that plays nothing but Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept and Metallica

1986 discovers substance that makes music sound ridiculously groovy

starts new band that plays nothing but Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Santana

starts singing while playing the drums because no one else will

1987 learns first song on guitar “Wish You Were Here”

Paul Houtz teaches him jazz chords on the guitar

Steve Sweeny (guitarist for the band) comes over one day and plays Floyd’s “Nobody Home” on piano. Jared, filled with envy, immediately takes up the piano again and discovers he can play by ear, spending all night working out “Nobody Home”

1988 wins high school talent contest with his band “Lemon Drop” playing a medley of Floyd songs: “Breathe, Echoes, Run like Hell, Comfortably Numb”

somehow manages to graduate high school

1989 plays piano in a crack house blues band in South Minneapolis

listens to nothing but Miles, Monk, and Coltrane spends his days walking up and down railroad tracks playing tenor sax
